Tomatoes make up at least 3 of my ‘5-a-day’ vegetable intake, and when they’re in season, I still do exactly what I did as a kid, popping a small cherry tomato into my mouth straight from the plant (though it took 3 years of plant homicide to get to that stage).

Even though Europeans have been popping South African Fair Trade oranges into their baskets alongside Fair Trade coffee, tea, bananas, flowers and chocolate for over 10 years, it’s only now that you can buy Fair Trade products here. Well done South Africa for cleaning up at The Drinks Business ‘Green Awards’. Paul Cluver, Backsberg and Inge Kotze of the BWI took home prizes, with nominations for Spier, Stellar Organics and Graham Beck too. The fact that The Drinks Business is Europe’s biggest trade magazine, that’s something to be Proudly South African about.

So, I had a good chuckle whilst perusing ‘A reading from the psalm of heritage breed pork’ by Grub Street. The article, which looks at Grist’s suggestion that people are embracing food as a new religion, was something that I could relate to. Being a foodie and an environmentalist, I regularly come across similarly over-zealous persons, and to be honest, I generally find them full of nonsense.
Please bear all this in mind as I introduce you to Eatability. Whilst, my own religious leanings incline towards the non-prophet type, it would be fair to admit to a fascination about food. Ferment that with studies on the science of the environment (which is not the same as being a tree hugger. Though I like trees…useful at picnics..). Final results: an inquiring mind about ‘good food’, in all senses of the word.
